Hello, and thanks for stopping by lumenowl!

    INTRO:

This amazing, iconic statement lamp has been totally reconditioned from a gorgeous 1960's Casa Pupo gourd-shaped lamp base. Finished in a glossy, luxurious glaze that sits somewhere between ochre, caramel and honey mustard, this large, beautiful lamp immediately pulls focus, and would be a standout feature in either a retro or contemporary styled home.

    ---------------

    A BIT OF HISTORY:

When advertising lawyer with a top drawer London contacts book Geoffrey Dobson and stylish Spaniard Jose "Pupo" Casasus got together in 1960, they created one of the decade’s most successful brands; Casa Pupo. The couple were a perfect team. Geoffrey’s legal acumen and advertising background gave the business its solid footing, whilst Jose provided style and flamboyance aplenty. Born out of a corner shop in Pimlico, near the studios of then up-and-coming photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones, the little shop with modest beginnings eventually spawned a worldwide chain with shops from Paris to Sydney.

When Winston Churchill died, Pupo draped the Pimlico window in plain fabric with just one red rose taking pride of place. It was at Casa Pupo that Robin Guild, who was to go on to found Designers Guild, cut his teeth as the manager of the Hampstead store. When in the 70's the business was sold the pair started again, and Casa Fina was born, selling the trademark “Pupo” rugs. This time it was a franchise and Casa Fina grew across the country.

    CONDITION:

The ceramic base is in stunning condition, and the gorgeously glossy glaze is still as potent as the day it was fired. This beautiful lamp has been a real survivor. Much more rarely, this particular lamp retains the original Casa Pupo sticker on the rear of the neck - a lovely vintage touch!

    ---------------

    THE TECHNICAL BIT:

PUPO has been fully (but respectfully) restored from an original 1960's lamp, with all vintage electrical components removed and replaced with modern variants. In place of the original, corroded brass B22/Bayonet lamp holder now sits a high quality, machine-milled brass E27/ES version, extended slightly from the base to ensure maximum visibility once a lampshade is added, and making the lamp compatible with bulbs sold in the UK and Europe. A new cord grip installed in the base ensures the cable stays securely and safely in place.

PUPO has been rewired with luxurious quality bark coloured linen and rayon covered cable in a fantastic zig-zag pattern, featuring high quality white inline rocker switches 20cm from the lamp bases (and a further 1m to the matching white UK 3-pin plug). The metal lamp holder is now fully earthed using three-core cable, and the lamp has been thoroughly PAT tested and approved (with a sticker affixed near the plug to show the PASS status). Components comprise of a British-made and certified lamp holders and plugs, and Italian-made cable and switches, which have passed or exceeded relevant CE and EU electrical integrity tests.

    INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:

Whilst lumenowl lamps are by default wired for the UK market, I am more than happy to adapt for use the world over! Please get in touch prior to placing your order so I can advise on additional costs.

    ---------------

    EUROPEAN BUYERS:

lumenowl lamps are configured with both the UK and European market in mind, utilising E27/E14 lamp holders and inline on/off switches. Should you wish to purchase a lamp for use in mainland Europe, I will replace the UK 3-pin plug with that of the version native to your country free of charge. The lamp will then undergo another PAT test.

    ---------------

    NORTH AMERICAN BUYERS:

If you're purchasing from the Americas or Canada, I'll need to take additional steps to ensure your new lamp works as though you'd bought it locally. The cost to convert one lamp in this way is £20/$25, which can be added upfront to the listing price prior to purchase. The fee includes the following work:

    - The removal of the EU/UK E27/ES brass lamp holder and replacing it with that of a brass US UL-certified E26 version. If the lamp features a EU/UK E14 lamp holder, I will provide a small brass E14 to E12 adapter, enabling the use of standard US E12/Candelabra bulbs.
    - The fitting of a harp saddle to facilitate the addition of a harp and subsequently a lampshade.
    - The stripping out of existing cabling and rewiring the lamp with white, UL-certified 2-core cable with a moulded 2-prong US plug and inline on/off switch.

The lamp will then undergo another PAT test.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can your lamps be customised for my country?

Yes, absolutely! I ship worldwide, and I've already serviced many international orders. My lamps are fitted with either E14/SES or E27/ES lamp holders (which are usable with bulbs sold all over the world) and UK 3-pin plugs, but these can be swapped out to US E26/E12 Candelabra fittings on request for a small additional fee. A plug corresponding to your country will be added, and, if necessary, an inline on/off switch.

Once converted, I will then test the lamps on a transformer and re-certify via an additional PAT test.

Please get in touch for more information regarding a quote for the conversion.

    Are your lamps safe?

Extremely! Each of my lamps is painstakingly assembled (I have a long history of competency with electrical wiring), and subsequently certified. I am PAT qualified and accredited. Moreover, all of my lamps use 3-core cable to ensure a proper, safe earthing conduit.

Please feel free to message me with any other questions.

Can you make custom lamps? What if I provided you with a vase or bottle?

One of the biggest joys of this whole endeavour so far for me has been problem solving each individual lamp I make.

If you've got a vase, bottle (or other item!) lying around you'd like to see turned into a lamp, please do get in touch with me! I'd be more than happy to discuss with you your ideas and how we could best achieve them.

Where did the names of your lamps come from?

All the lamps I make (either individual or a series) originally were named after all the dog siblings I've had in the family over the years, or pups I've known over the years. As my collection has grown, I've started to use character names from my favourite films and TV shows.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or broken?

I'm extremely conscientious about packaging. In the unlikely event your order is damaged in transit and arrives to you broken, please immediately photograph both the packaging and the lamp istelf. Please then forward the images within 24 hours to tom@lumenowl.co.uk, and I will then assess and resolve the situation for you.

Can you repair or rewire an old lamp I have?

Yes, absolutely! I've already done this a couple of times. I can remove aged lamp holders, wiring and switches and replace with brand new variants. Once complete, I will exhaustively test and certify via a PAT test.

Please drop me a message if you have any questions about this service, or would like a quote.
