Hello, and thanks for stopping by lumenowl!

    PLEASE NOTE:

lumenowl lamps do not ship with lampshades, unless expressly stated. Lamps are modelled with a variety of shades to give a prospective buyer an idea of what might work in terms of size, shape and colour. If the shade modelled is available for purchase, the link to the third party seller is provided in the listing.

A second, smaller is available (pictured), and they would make an incredible pair.

    INTRO:

This strikingly minimalist table lamp has been restored from an existing Poole Pottery model 698A lamp base. Presented in sloping, elegant bottle form, and finished in a glaze so dark brown it's bordering on black, this gorgeous lamp would make a fantastic statement placed on a midcentury sideboard.

    A BIT OF HISTORY:

The enduring legacy of Poole Pottery is almost as dynamic as the vast, fabulously varied range of ceramics it produced. The company that eventually became known as Poole Pottery began life in 1873 as Carter & Company. By the mid-1880's, the company had established itself as a major player in ceramics marketplace, and was considered a serious competitor to even the most established ceramicists.

Despite changing times and tastes, the company endlessly adapted, surviving the financial and creative vacuums of both world wars. Sensing the seismic cultural and artistic shifts of the 1960's, the company formed a separate design studio, headed by designer Robert Jefferson, who worked in conjunction with artists Tony Morris and Guy Sydenham. The trio designed and produced stunning, avant-garde works (including the Helios lamp series) that remain highly sought after to this day. By 1963, the company officially rebranded as 'Poole Pottery'.

Poole was sold at some of the world's most luxurious outlets, including Harrods, Selfridges and New York's own Bloomingdales. Sadly, like so many ceramicists before and after, Poole Pottery began losing money during the 1980's, and were simply unable to capture the same level of interest they once had so effortlessly commanded. Despite a flurry of buyouts and cash injections, Poole Pottery all but collapsed by the mid-2000's. In 2011, Poole Pottery was taken over by Denby Pottery.

    CONDITION:

The original 1960's base is in phenomenal condition, with no cracks, chips or glaze loss spoiling the original aesthetic. The beauty glossy glaze absolutely pops when hit either either natural or artificial light.

    THE TECHNICAL BIT:

SLENDER has had all existing electrical components removed and replaced with modern variants. In the place of the original Bakelite B22 lamp holder now sits a gorgeous, machine-milled brass E27/ES version with new matching brass fitments, extended from the base to ensure maximum visibility once a lampshade is added. This enables the lamp to be used worldwide.

SLENDER has been rewired with luxurious quality 3-core black fabric cable, featuring a high quality black inline rocker switch 20cm from the lamp base (with another 1m from the switch to the matching white UK 3-pin plug). A new internal cord grip keeps the cable sturdily and safely in place. The lamp has been thoroughly PAT tested and approved (with a sticker affixed near the plug to show the PASS status). Components comprise of a British-made and certified lamp holder and plug, and Italian-made cable and switch, which have passed or exceeded relevant CE and EU electrical integrity tests.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can your lamps be customised for my country?

Yes, absolutely! I ship worldwide, and I've already serviced many international orders. My lamps are fitted with either E14/SES or E27/ES lamp holders (which are usable with bulbs sold all over the world) and UK 3-pin plugs, but these can be swapped out to US E26/E12 Candelabra fittings on request for a small additional fee. A plug corresponding to your country will be added, and, if necessary, an inline on/off switch.

Once converted, I will then test the lamps on a transformer and re-certify via an additional PAT test.

Please get in touch for more information regarding a quote for the conversion.

    Are your lamps safe?

Extremely! Each of my lamps is painstakingly assembled (I have a long history of competency with electrical wiring), and subsequently certified. I am PAT qualified and accredited. Moreover, all of my lamps use 3-core cable to ensure a proper, safe earthing conduit.

Please feel free to message me with any other questions.

Can you make custom lamps? What if I provided you with a vase or bottle?

One of the biggest joys of this whole endeavour so far for me has been problem solving each individual lamp I make.

If you've got a vase, bottle (or other item!) lying around you'd like to see turned into a lamp, please do get in touch with me! I'd be more than happy to discuss with you your ideas and how we could best achieve them.

Where did the names of your lamps come from?

All the lamps I make (either individual or a series) originally were named after all the dog siblings I've had in the family over the years, or pups I've known over the years. As my collection has grown, I've started to use character names from my favourite films and TV shows.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or broken?

I'm extremely conscientious about packaging. In the unlikely event your order is damaged in transit and arrives to you broken, please immediately photograph both the packaging and the lamp istelf. Please then forward the images within 24 hours to tom@lumenowl.co.uk, and I will then assess and resolve the situation for you.

Can you repair or rewire an old lamp I have?

Yes, absolutely! I've already done this a couple of times. I can remove aged lamp holders, wiring and switches and replace with brand new variants. Once complete, I will exhaustively test and certify via a PAT test.

Please drop me a message if you have any questions about this service, or would like a quote.
