    INTRO:

This towering, beautifully ornate 1950's brass Stiffel lamp has been full restored and brought to 21st century safety standards. Constructed from interlocking brass pieces and finishing in a tall, thin neck, this striking lamp would be a wonderful focal point in any mid-century OR contemporary home.

    A BIT OF HISTORY:

The Stiffel Lamp Company has a unique history and a place in Americans hearts since its humble beginnings in 1932. Before Stiffel Lamps, if you wanted a luxury, designer lamp that was not just functional you had only one company to go to, Tiffany. Today there are many "designer" lighting companies but none with the history that the Stiffel Lamps Company has.

Ted Stiffel started the Stiffel Lamps Company back in 1932, when it was quite a risk to start making designer lamps and lighting products when almost no one else was doing it.

Even though Ted Stiffel no longer runs the show today, all Stiffel Lamps are still handcrafted and designed to be a unique piece of art. From the tiniest details, like a stamp on the top of the lampshade metal, to the hand polishing to finish the lamp base, Stiffel Lamps are made like no other lamp and look like no other lamp.

Stiffel Lamps did well early on, but during WWII they started making bolts for the war effort until the government contracts dried up. After the war, Ted Stiffel went back to doing what he does best, designing and manufacturing high quality, one-of-a-kind lamps.

Today the tradition carries on, although not in Chicago, but in New Jersey. In a 40,000 square foot facility, each Stiffel Lamp is still made in the tradition of its founder.

    CONDITION:

The unit is in excellent vintage condition, and had really responded well to a gentle but thorough cleansing with Autosol metal cleaner. I resisted the urge to fully restore and buff the brass, as the now unfinished bronzing is very attractive. A such, pitting/oxidation remains on the brass, but this simply adds to the vintage charm.

    ---------------

    THE TECHNICAL BIT:

As this is an American lamp, it featured a US E26 lamp holder, making it unsuitable and unsafe for use in the UK or Europe.

All vintage electrical components have been removed. In place of the extremely aged lamp holder now sits a brass E27/ES version, enabling the use of modern LED and smart bulbs, and making the lamp compatible with lamps sold in the UK, Europe and beyond. Crucially, the new lamp holder has meant an earth connection has been introduced to the lamp, and as it's entirely metal... that's a very good thing!

TOWER has been rewired with luxurious quality 3-core bark coloured linen and rayon covered cable in a fantastic zig-zag pattern, featuring a high quality white inline rocker switch 20cm from the lamp base (with another 1m from the switch to the matching white UK 3-pin plug). An internal cord grip keeps the cable sturdily in place. The metal lamp holder is earthed, and the lamp has been thoroughly PAT tested and approved (with a sticker affixed near the plug to show the PASS status). Components comprise of a British-made and certified lamp holder and plug, and Italian-made cable and switch, which have passed or exceeded relevant CE and EU electrical integrity tests.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can your lamps be customised for my country?

Yes, absolutely! I ship worldwide, and I've already serviced many international orders. My lamps are fitted with either E14/SES or E27/ES lamp holders (which are usable with bulbs sold all over the world) and UK 3-pin plugs, but these can be swapped out to US E26/E12 Candelabra fittings on request for a small additional fee. A plug corresponding to your country will be added, and, if necessary, an inline on/off switch.

Once converted, I will then test the lamps on a transformer and re-certify via an additional PAT test.

Please get in touch for more information regarding a quote for the conversion.

    Are your lamps safe?

Extremely! Each of my lamps is painstakingly assembled (I have a long history of competency with electrical wiring), and subsequently certified. I am PAT qualified and accredited. Moreover, all of my lamps use 3-core cable to ensure a proper, safe earthing conduit.

Please feel free to message me with any other questions.

Can you make custom lamps? What if I provided you with a vase or bottle?

One of the biggest joys of this whole endeavour so far for me has been problem solving each individual lamp I make.

If you've got a vase, bottle (or other item!) lying around you'd like to see turned into a lamp, please do get in touch with me! I'd be more than happy to discuss with you your ideas and how we could best achieve them.

Where did the names of your lamps come from?

All the lamps I make (either individual or a series) originally were named after all the dog siblings I've had in the family over the years, or pups I've known over the years. As my collection has grown, I've started to use character names from my favourite films and TV shows.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or broken?

I'm extremely conscientious about packaging. In the unlikely event your order is damaged in transit and arrives to you broken, please immediately photograph both the packaging and the lamp istelf. Please then forward the images within 24 hours to tom@lumenowl.co.uk, and I will then assess and resolve the situation for you.

Can you repair or rewire an old lamp I have?

Yes, absolutely! I've already done this a couple of times. I can remove aged lamp holders, wiring and switches and replace with brand new variants. Once complete, I will exhaustively test and certify via a PAT test.

Please drop me a message if you have any questions about this service, or would like a quote.
